Poem excerpt, Dreams February 5 2022

why do we dream?

lay back on our beds and close our eyes; what do we see?

tumble heads over hearts in an irrational spiral, past cottony clouds and willow trees

fall prey to petty desires and wants and needs

toe the line between honesty and greed

searching, searching, searching in the dark; what do we see?

we stumble into the carnivorous cavern with stalactites swaying from icicle threads

our minds flayed bare before us

a world built in safety and spun of every broken thing we’ve ever felt, every sallow thought, all the cracked masks and

torn seams

tongues bit to keep truths untold.

armor crumbles under heavy scrutiny

and dreams break.

these silly dreams.

why do we dream?
